How It Works

The process is straightforward. Here's what to expect from the time you reach out to the time your marriage is officially recorded.

  • Contact us to schedule your ceremony Call, text, or send a message to request your preferred date, time, and ceremony location. Let us know which ceremony style interests you and we'll confirm availability and any details you need before the day.
  • Obtain your Florida marriage license A valid Florida marriage license must be obtained before the ceremony. In Leon County, marriage licenses are issued by the Leon County Clerk of Court. The license must be in hand at the ceremony — we cannot perform the ceremony without it.

  • Attend the ceremony Bring your valid Florida marriage license and a photo ID. If you plan to have witnesses, arrange for them ahead of time — let us know when scheduling if you have questions about witness requirements for your ceremony style.
  • Ceremony is performed We conduct your ceremony — civil or personalized — according to your preferences. The ceremony is kept respectful, clear, and legally complete. After the ceremony, the marriage license is completed with the required officiant information.
  • License is returned for recording After the ceremony, the completed marriage license is returned according to the Leon County Clerk's procedures for recording in official records. The Clerk records the marriage and issues certified copies per their process.

What to Bring to Your Ceremony

To ensure everything goes smoothly on your ceremony day, here's what you'll need to bring.

  • Valid Florida Marriage License Issued by the Clerk of Court — in Leon County, this is the Leon County Clerk's Office. The license must be current and valid at the time of the ceremony. We cannot perform the ceremony without it.
  • Photo ID A government-issued photo ID is recommended for both parties for peace of mind and coordination. Driver's license or passport both work.
  • Witnesses (if desired) If you'd like witnesses at your ceremony, arrange for them in advance. Let us know when scheduling if you have questions about witness requirements for your specific ceremony type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Florida notary public officiate a wedding?

Yes. Florida law includes commissioned Florida notaries public among the persons authorized to solemnize marriages in Florida. Melissa K. Garner is an active, commissioned Florida Notary Public and is fully authorized to perform marriage ceremonies in the State of Florida.

Where do we get a marriage license in Tallahassee?

Marriage licenses in Tallahassee are issued by the Leon County Clerk of Court. Both parties typically need to appear in person at the Clerk's Office with valid photo ID. There may be a waiting period after issuance before the license becomes valid — confirm the current requirements directly with the Leon County Clerk's Office before scheduling your ceremony date.

What happens to the marriage license after the ceremony?

After the ceremony is performed, the marriage license is completed with the required officiant information and returned for recording according to the Leon County Clerk's procedures. The Clerk then records the marriage in official records and issues certified copies. Certified copies of the marriage record are issued by the Clerk of Court — not by MK Notary Services.

Do you offer small or intimate ceremonies?

Yes — this is our specialty. We offer simple civil ceremonies and personalized short ceremonies by appointment, ideal for couples who want a meaningful but uncomplicated experience. We can accommodate small gatherings of close family and friends.

Can you travel to our ceremony location?

Yes. We offer off-site ceremonies and can travel to an agreed location in Tallahassee and nearby areas — a park, backyard, venue, or other setting meaningful to you. Travel availability is based on scheduling, so confirm the location when booking.

Do you also provide apostille services for the marriage certificate?

Yes. If you need your Florida marriage certificate authenticated for use in another country — for immigration, residency, citizenship, or other international legal purposes — an apostille may be required. MK Notary assists with apostille preparation and submission to the Florida Department of State. See our Apostille Marriage Certificate page for details.

How far in advance should we book?

We recommend contacting us as soon as you have a preferred date in mind to confirm availability. Keep in mind that Florida marriage licenses may have a waiting period after issuance before becoming valid — factor that into your timeline when planning the ceremony date.
